Dr. M. Shafiqul Islam is Professor of the Institute of Marine Sciences, University of Chittagong. He was also former Director of this Institute and Dean of the Faculty of Marine Sciences and Fisheries. He specializes in Marine Pollution, Climate Change Impacts, Ecosystem Health Assessment (EHA), and Marine Biogeochemistry. Dr. Islam holds a PhD in Marine Biodiversity and Environment from the University of Chittagong. He serves as the General Secretary of the Coastal and Ocean Research Group (CORG) of Bangladesh and previously held the position of Director at the Institute of Marine Sciences (2020–2023). His research portfolio includes projects funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) and the World Bank-supported Sustainable Coastal and Marine Fisheries Project, focusing on saltmarsh restoration, ocean acidification, and Artemia biomass commercialization.
